Introduction

What this research is about

CeylonLawMate: Bringing Data into the Sri Lankan Courtroom

The legal system in Sri Lanka combines common law and civil law traditions. It is a democratic republic with a President as the head of state and a Prime Minister as the head of government. The Parliament is responsible for legislation, and the legal system is divided into civil and criminal law. The judiciary comprises various courts, including the Supreme Court and Magistrate Courts. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka oversees the legal profession. Concerns exist regarding the independence of the judiciary, political interference, and human rights issues. Efforts have been made to reform the legal system and strengthen the rule of law. The Constitution guarantees fundamental rights, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Protection of these rights varies based on socioeconomic status and location. Legal documents such as the Constitution, statutes, regulations, and court judgments shape the legal system. Case files follow a structured format, and summaries aid legal professionals in understanding and communicating case details. Access to legal information is limited, but an AI-powered Q&A system is proposed to enhance access, efficiency, and impartiality. The system would address challenges such as limited accessibility, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and adaptability of existing legal information solutions. It would provide a centralized repository of up-to-date legal information, analyze complex queries, and offer decision support. An AI-powered mobile app is also suggested to help individuals navigate the legal system, understand their rights, and find suitable legal representation.

Ceylon Law Mate Features

What we have achieve throught this research

01

image

Summarize under two different categories

The two AI models can summarize cases under two categories: facts of the case and judicial reasoning. The facts of the case summary includes the relevant details and arguments made by both plaintiff and defendant, while the judicial reasoning summary focuses on the legal reasoning and principles used by the judge to reach their decision. This structured approach can provide users with a more comprehensive and useful overview of the case, which can be helpful for legal professionals who needs to understand the details and legal principles behind a particular case.

02

image

Summarize previous cases.

The system uses AI models along with NLP and machine learning to summarize previous legal cases related to freedom from torture, which is a subdomain of fundamental rights. The system identifies relevant cases and summarizes them in 500 words or less, providing users with a quick and accessible overview of the legal principles and precedents related to this subdomain. This process can be useful for legal professionals who should analyze and understand more deeper in the legal landscape related to freedom from torture.

03

image

Display the reading reference materials along with the answer.

The AI model uses reading materials that have been fed to the system to answer legal questions. When the model provides an answer, the reading materials it used are displayed alongside the answer on the website, providing transparency and accountability for the model's decision-making process. This helps users verify the accuracy and reliability of the model's answers and build trust in the system.

04

image

Answering for the questions

The web based system provides relevant answers to legal questions asked by lawyers or judges. The system searches for and displays the answer by referring to reading materials, such as legal textbooks and court decisions, stored in its database. This process can save time and effort for legal professionals and help ensure that legal decisions are based on reliable and authoritative information.

05

image

Guide to proper lawyers

The app can determine whether a user’s violates a law by examining the case. This app suggests proper lawyers for the user to contact by analyzing previous successful cases and recommends the documents the user should bring when they meet with the lawyer. This step helps users take concrete steps towards resolving their legal issues with the help of appropriate legal representation.

06

image

Detect law violation

The app uses an algorithm or artificial intelligence system to determine whether a user's problem constitutes a violation of the law. The app does this by analyzing the user's problem and comparing it to previous legal cases stored in a database. This process helps users understand their legal rights and options if they are unsure whether their problem is illegal or not.
